A shoaling gadoid that likes rough and rocky ground, more common in the north, especially north-east England and Scotland.[1]

How to recognise it

  • A straight, pale lateral line along the whole body, unlike the curved dark line of pollack.[2]
  • The lower jaw projects only slightly, and there may be a tiny chin barbel.[1]
  • Olive-green, brown or nearly black back, with white to silver flanks and belly.[1]
