What fish is this?Identify a fish from a photo

A small, flattened bottom fish that lies part buried in sand or shell gravel. It is found on all coasts of Britain and Ireland, and anglers mostly meet it as a small catch.[1]

How to recognise it

  • Flattened, scaleless body with a broad, triangular head and eyes on top.[1]
  • Two dorsal fins. Mature males have a tall, sail-like first fin and bright blue marks; females are dull brown with blotches.[1]
  • Sharp spines on the gill cover, and the lower jaw juts out. Small ones can be mistaken for gobies.[1]
