What fish is this?Identify a fish from a photo

The larger sandeel, around 20 to 30 cm, found close inshore over sand. Anglers usually catch it by accident on mackerel gear.[1]

How to recognise it

  • The upper jaw cannot be pushed out like a tube, and there are small teeth in the roof of the mouth, unlike the lesser sandeel.[2]
  • A dark spot on each side of the head or snout.[2]
  • Dorsal fin runs from behind the pectoral fin almost to the tail; blue-green back and silvery white belly.[2]

When and where

Found over
sand, shingle, estuaries, harbours, piers[1]
Baits
feathers, daylights, spinners, sabiki lures[1]
