A very large, cold-water flatfish that lives on or near the seabed. Most UK anglers meet it from boats in the north, and shore fish are rare and small.[1]

How to recognise it

  • Diamond-shaped, slim body with both eyes on the right side and a large mouth with sharp teeth.[1]
  • Dark brown, green or black on the back, often mottled, with a pale underside; adults are uniformly dark.[1]
  • Dorsal and anal fins run most of the length of the body, and the lateral line has a prominent curve.[1]
