What fish is this?Identify a fish from a photo

A dark, streamlined member of the cod family that hunts around kelp, rocks and wrecks. UK anglers catch it from rocky shore marks, piers and boats.[1]

How to recognise it

  • The lower jaw sticks out past the upper jaw, and there is no chin barbel.[1]
  • The dark lateral line bends sharply up over the pectoral fin; on coalfish it runs straight and pale.[1]
  • Dark back with yellow to orange blotches on the upper body, and silver-grey sides.[1]

When and where

Season
Mar–Aug[2]
Found over
kelp, rocky ground, reefs, wrecks, piers, breakwaters, harbours[2]
Baits
sandeel, king ragworm, white ragworm, mud ragworm, artificial eels, jellyworms, lures[2]
Tide
Pollack feed on moving water, so fish when the tide is running and let the bait drift with the current.[2]
Light
From piers, night fishing works better when the bait is kept near the surface.[2]

Spring and summer are the prime times for shore pollack.[2]
