A protected species. If you catch one, handle it carefully and put it back alive.

What fish is this?Identify a fish from a photo

A slim, fast coastal shark of the south and west coasts, prized as a catch-and-release fish. Anglers in England and Wales may use rod and line but cannot land a tope caught from a boat.[1]

How to recognise it

  • Small second dorsal fin, about the same size as the anal fin and directly above it. A smoothhound's second dorsal is much bigger.[2]
  • Very large lower tail lobe.[2]
  • Blue-grey to light brown on the back, pale to white below. Teeth are small and blade-like, not flat and crushing like a smoothhound's.[2]

When and where

Found over
open water, near the seabed[2]
